Ballakermeen High School Theatre
The ninth summer production of the Manx Gateway Drama Group is about to be staged at the Studio Theatre, Ballakermeen High School. “Robin Hood and his Merry Maids”, a mediaeval romp featuring all the usual traditional characters, will be presented there, for one night only, on Wednesday, 25th May at 7pm.
The group was founded in 2008, and consists of adults with learning difficulties. All the productions are written “in house”, mainly by Anne Clarke and Elan Karran, but with additions by the cast as the production develops! Over the years they have become more adventurous as everyone involved has grown in confidence and ability. The emphasis is on enjoyment, however, and increasing the confidence of the performers.
This year the play is being directed by Sandie Newson, assisted by choreographer Jill Hyde, and supported by a group of enthusiastic helpers. Janet Norris, Hilary Leece and Jenny Green will come along as usual to supervise the make-up and hair, and technical assistance is provided by Steve Brookes and Tom Baggaley of the Studio Theatre. On and off stage support is given by members of the Douglas Choral Union, who have adopted Gateway Drama as their charity in recent years.
Rehearsals can be “challenging”, but it’s usually “all right on the night”, and if there is the occasional slip, then the benevolent audience is very forgiving! If you would like to join them, tickets at £5 for adults and £3 for children under 12 are available from Margaret Clucas on 662554.
