I am Michael Tait, aged 54, married to Mary with 2 sons. Every few years I like to raise money for a charity and in the process set myself a personal goal in order to push my limits. This year I wish to raise funds for a local charity Project 21 which is just the other side of Noble’s Park from our house. Mary raised money a few years ago by walking 32.5 miles to Peel in the Parish Walk.
My brother-in-law Karel is testament to the positive help that came from Project 21 over many many years. Karel found himself in a dark place but through support he found a real purpose in life. Karel soon found himself representing the Isle of Man with his swimming and other sports, traveling to many overseas locations such as Canada, Greece and China, winning many medals in the process.
Karel is now retired from the Special Olympics and this will let others benefit the same way that he did. It is time to raise funds so that many more can acquire similar experiences.
My challenges will be to tackle what is reputed to be the most difficult Fell Race on the island and in addition attempt the longest one which is classified as an Ultra.
The Bradda/Niabyl Fell Race takes place on 13 March. The course last year was included as part of the English Fell Running Championship,15.5 miles (25km) with 5,869ft (1789m) of ascent. As an extra I will attempt the Isle of Man Mountain Ultra on 24 September which is 31.7m (51km) with 8,202ft (2500m) of ascent.
I am putting in training on the hills and have acquired a running buddy which is making it easier. I actually started on 1 January with the New Years Day Fancy Dress Fell Race. It is a big undertaking for me as only a few years ago I was unable to run for more than 5 minutes without stopping to gather my breathe.
I hope you will be able to support this worthy cause. Any donation will be welcome. A pound here a pound there, it all adds up.
